Today we are talking about baggage. Not a luggage bag for travel, and not one of those bags from a high-end store. This baggage is something we carry, often without realizing we are carrying it.
Emotional baggage is the collection of unresolved feelings we carry from past experiences. It can come from past relationships, childhood experiences, disappointments, grief, betrayal, or the expectations we place on ourselves. And over time, if we do not release it, it gets heavier and heavier, weighing on our mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
How it hides in plain sight
It can look like holding on to resentment. Feeling stuck in past pain. Constantly replaying situations in your mind. Difficulty trusting others. Feeling emotionally drained. Many women carry emotional baggage quietly. You still show up for your family. You still go to work. You still smile. And inside, you feel tired and weighed down by emotions that were never fully processed.
Often the baggage comes from moments when we felt unseen, unheard, or unsupported, and instead of releasing those feelings, we pushed them down. But buried emotions do not disappear. They just wait for the wrong time to resurface. And until we are ready to face them, they will keep doing exactly that.
What holding on costs you
Holding on to emotional pain affects our relationships, our work, how we see ourselves, and our inner peace. When we hold on to past hurt, we unknowingly build walls around our heart. Those walls may protect us from pain, but they also block joy, love, and connection.
So let's be clear about what letting go actually means. Letting go does not mean the past did not matter. It does not mean what happened to you was okay. Letting go simply means you are choosing peace over pain, and healing over holding on. That is a powerful decision.
Recognize what you are carrying
Ask yourself honestly. Is there someone I feel anger or resentment toward? Is there a situation I replay in my head over and over? Am I holding on to guilt, or to shame? You cannot set down what you have not named.
The suitcase
Now, if you are able, take a moment with me. Close your eyes. Imagine you are toting a heavy suitcase, the kind you have had to drag through an airport, struggling to lift it, lugging it down a long corridor. You know how tiring and burdensome that feels.
Now imagine that inside that suitcase, instead of your essential items, are the hurts, the disappointments, and the painful memories you have been carrying. Feel how heavy it is.
Then imagine setting it down. You do not even have to open it. Leave it sitting right there, and walk away from it. Take a deep breath in, and breathe out. Notice how much lighter you feel when you allow yourself to release what no longer serves you. That feeling is yours to have.
Letting go does not mean you forget your story. It means the story stops carrying you backward. If there is a suitcase you have been dragging for years and you are ready to set it down for good, that is the work I do with women every day, and it begins with a free 30-minute consultation. You were never meant to carry it alone.
