Before we begin, take a slow, deep breath in. Now gently exhale. This time is especially for you.
Today I want to talk about something that affects many of us in ways we may not even realize. Generational trauma, which some of us grew up hearing called a generational curse. It is the emotional pain, behaviors, and patterns passed down from one generation to the next. It often begins with experiences that were never processed or healed, unresolved grief, abuse, neglect, poverty, addiction, family dysfunction. And it travels quietly through families, showing up in how we communicate, how we handle our emotions, and how we form relationships.
How it gets passed down
Maybe you grew up in a home where expressing emotion was shunned. You were taught to hold it in, teased for your feelings, or told to keep them to yourself. Maybe love was present in your home, but it was never expressed the way it should have been. Many boys were taught that crying made them weak, so they grew into men who hide their feelings to seem strong.
Here is the truth of it. When emotions are suppressed instead of expressed, the pain stays inside, carries into adulthood, and travels into the next generation. Nobody chooses this on purpose. Over time the patterns simply become normalized, until unhealthy starts to look like just how our family is.
Have you ever said to yourself, I do not want to repeat what I experienced growing up, and then caught yourself doing some of the same things? If so, you are not alone, and that moment of catching yourself is not failure. It is awareness arriving. And acknowledgement and awareness are the first step to making a change.
Healing the woman within
So many of us were taught to stay strong and stay silent. But true strength includes healing. Healing the woman within means giving yourself permission to feel, reflect, and grow. It means understanding that your emotions are not weaknesses. They are signals that something within you needs attention and care.
As you do this inner work, you will begin to discover parts of yourself that were hidden under years of trauma. Your voice. Your boundaries. Your inner peace. They were never gone. They were waiting.
A gentle reflection exercise
In your quiet time this week, take your journal and sit with three questions. What emotional patterns do I observe in myself? What behaviors in my life feel familiar to what I experienced in my family? And what patterns would I like to change moving forward?
Write your answers down. This is not an exercise in judging yourself or your family. It is meant to bring clarity and understanding, because you cannot change what you have not yet seen.
The legacy you are creating
If you are healing from generational trauma, I want you to know something. You are making a profound move. Every time you choose growth over old patterns, you are creating a new legacy, a new chapter of your story built on awareness, compassion, and emotional health.
Healing is a process, and it does not happen overnight. But each step you take toward understanding yourself brings you closer to your serenity. And your healing does not stop with you. It creates a ripple effect for the generations that follow you. The cycle that traveled through your family for generations can end its journey at your feet.
If you are ready to be the one who breaks the cycle, you do not have to do it alone. My work with women begins exactly here, and it starts with a free 30-minute consultation. Your healing is important, and you matter.
